Lessons
(Teaching Philosophy)
Voice (classical/jazz/musical theater) It all starts with correct
breathing to support the pitch. I studied with Jerome Hines
when I lived in New York. I am a bass like Jerome and I really found myself
improving with his technique. He has two books about singing that he wrote
that I recommend very highly. They are both available at Amazon.com.
I've worked as a rehearsal pianist /musical director and worked
with helping singers prepare for their auditions. I myself have been auditioning
as a singer so I know how to help the singer get prepared for their 'big
break'!
| Piano (pop/jazz/) Beginners or Children are my specialty, I know how it is to have a boring teacher! A lot of people say they wished they kept up with their piano lessons when they were a child. I personally believe that some of the fault has to be put on the shoulders of teachers who are not inspiring or unaware that sometimes you have to let the student play music that they can connect to. Not all students are preparing themselves for a Carnegie Hall debut. I ask the student what they are interested in playing and incorporate that in the lesson. That's the music the student will enjoy the most and will then practice without complaining. | ![]() |

Drums (rock/funk/jazz) I teach either the traditional or match
grip technique, Beginners or Children are my specialty. I studied with
Alan Dawson and Gary Chaffe when I was at Berklee College of Music. I
was also a percussion major in the graduate program at Manhattan School
of Music. Drums were my first instrument; I used to be mesmerrized by
the drummer in a rock band. That was the instrument I just had to play.
I was a basher when I first started until I got turned on to Jazz by being
totally overwhelmed by Buddy Rich. As my big band instructor Clarence
Awaya used to say, "He was Ungodly!" I studied with Larry Tandal
who turned me on to Jim Chapin's Jazz Independence technique. Larry also
stressed learning the rudiments which I also now stress to my students.
I was fortunate enough to study with some of the world's finest
music instructors. I wasn't a natural born musician who didn't need any
lessons or had to practice. I studied with the best and through hard work
and practicing I became a professional musician. Some of us may just want
to improve our skills for personal enjoyment and satisfaction. I am here
for the student who have either of those goals.
